Why Your Dreams Matter Now More Than Ever

We hear, “Follow your dreams” so often that it just doesn’t have an emotional impact on us anymore —  a trite platitude, perhaps, from an age gone by?

There is so much to do in life with it’s necessary obligations and commitments that this imperative “Follow Your Dreams!!” is almost a whisper from a distant memory…from a time when we were too young, naive and innocent to know how the world really worked. Now, we are older and wiser, no?

BUT ARE WE?

Go to any nonprofessional taekwondo tournament or any nonprofessional sporting event and you see the spirit of dreams coming true in action every single day. There is no sophisticated cynicism at these tournaments, nor critics with the know-it-all stares. The people at these tournaments are living their dreams.

They may not be at the “Show” or at the Olympics, and that doesn’t seem to matter. What they are is committed to being the best they can be pursuing a belief that their life is better by giving their all, living with intention, and having the courage to care enough to stand up and be counted in the Arena.

If you  lack faith in your life or in yourself right now, it might help you to witness children and adults, alike, willing to step up and show what they love and care about – COME WHAT MAY- in the Arena.

It takes COURAGE, COMMITMENT, and FAITH to make your dreams come true like that.

WHY YOUR DREAMS MATTER NOW MORE THAN EVER

When we are caught up in our daily lives it really doesn’t feel like life is limited and that death can happen tomorrow or faster than we think.

Does it?

We have so much noise, you know? And who is doing all the talking? Obligation? Email? Facebook? When you don’t stand up and fight for your dreams, you end up living other people’s priorities.

Depending on your circumstance, you could have school, work, after-school sports, chauffer duty, rehearsals, recitals, grocery shopping, home maintenance and on the list goes … and don’t forget that sugary sweet obsession called Social Media, Email, or binge watching our favorite shows on Netflix.

Within all of that busyness, we often can feel a sense of comfortableness and the mediocrity of that routine – the numbness of it —  can hit us in the face when we least expect it.

Isn’t it true that when you “dial it in” you really don’t feel much of anything?

Sometimes it takes an event, like someone passing, to remind us of how short life can be and that if we want an extraordinary life, we are the ones who have to make it happen.

“Wait. What?” When we take the time to look at how we actually feel, how we interact with those we care about, and how we are showing up in the world, our awareness starts to widen, our feelings start to come to the surface, and often we are surprised by who we have become.

Does it really have to take the death of a loved one to ask the question, “Am I living my best self every single day and living a life I love?”

We, then, can make a commitment to live a more purposeful life for a few weeks or months. But then the noise of daily life intrudes, once more, and we forget that absolute truth: we only have so much time.

Here are the essential ingredients to start feeling more purposeful and fulfilled in your daily life. When you look in the mirror and like how you are showing up in the world AND are taking the steps to bring your mission, vision and dreams to life, you can’t ask anymore from yourself than that.

MAKE IT COUNT PROTOCOL

  1. Act with Intention. Whether you are spending time with loved ones, working out, or working on that project, be intentional about the outcomes that you want for yourself in each situation. Act with the intention to live from your best self. Who are you when you are at your best? (My high performance coaching clients have gone through an exercise where they can remind themselves to be their best selves on demand.)
  2. Respect your dreams. You have them for a reason and that reason is to bring out the very best of your skills and talents so that you can share them with the world. You were created with amazing capabilities that you haven’t even scratched the surface of yet. Don’t believe me? Do research on the most influential people of our time and you will discover how they thought about themselves and their lives. They grew to be great.
  3. Develop your courage. To make your dreams real, you need to practice doing that which you fear each day. It’s like developing a muscle – you need to practice to make it stronger. Talk about your dreams in everyday conversation so that you develop the courage to speak from your heart. You need to feel that it is cool again to try. Need inspiration? Look at a child giving their all.

By the way, fear isn’t an indication not to do something, per se, fear is a trigger that tells you something is really important and to pay attention. Fear can be a gateway to a new level of purpose, success, and fulfillment. Only you can decide for yourself what to do with fear. But to think that people who are successful, who are dreamers, who execute on the moonshots don’t have doubts, fears and insecurities is to not really understand how we learn and grow into the people we are meant to become.

How much better will your life be tomorrow, next week, or a year from now if you used this protocol, consistently? You deserve a life of your dreams and your dreams are no less important than the most successful people in the world.  You don’t have to take my word for it! Try this protocol for yourself and see!
